Jeryl founded Chicago Area Ethnic Resources in 2007 as an Illinois
not-for-profit organization. From 1990-2000, she served as the executive director of the Illinois Ethnic Coalition, widely recognized as one of Chicago’s most important venues for groups to come together on issues of common concern. “We worked with virtually every major ethnic group in Chicago,” recalls Jeryl, “and the biggest lesson was that groups cannot be reduced to a racial category or a sound bite based on a stereotype. We wanted to get people’s stories out there and help the general public understand that the city is far from just black and white.” Although Jeryl left IEC in 2000 for academia and philanthropy, she never lost her passion. “For years after IEC dissolved, I was asked by so many, ‘when are you going to update the ethnic resources?’ As the 2010 census rolled around, I knew it was time to revisit this important work. I was eager to see what had changed, how ethnic communities had grown or declined, the migration patterns from city to suburbs, the pressing issues politically and otherwise, and how newer groups identify with Chicago and in the larger milieu.” -

Cynthia has been an adjunct instructor in Medill School of Journalism master's degree program at Northwestern University since 1993. Before that she spent 20 years as a reporter and editor in the community newspaper business. A veteran of the Civil Rights Movement in the 1960s, she joined with the Illinois Ethnic Coalition as editor of the original "Ethnic Handbook,' published in 1997, and "Ultimate Directory of Ethnic Organizations and Media" in 2000. She also authored "The Color of Leadership," about minorities in high positions in the media, at Northwestern's Newspaper Management Center, and conducted four research projects at the university on media coverage of race and ethnicity. Working on ethnic resources is a "labor of love" for Cynthia, who firmly believes that "understanding other ethnic groups is the key to a successful diverse society."
